Richard Byrne, author of Free Technology for Teachers, recently wrote a post about NatureWorksEverywhere.org. While I’m sure this website is cram-packed with valuable information, Byrne focused on a game entitled Conservation Connection. After playing the game a couple times I decided it would be a beneficial tool to use with students when learning about conservation. The game gives the student an object or food they may use on a regular basis, like lemonade. A glass of lemonade is put in the center of a large wheel and surrounding it are different objects that seem to have nothing to do with lemonade, like dynamite, a fence, a beaver, flowers, etc. The goal for the students is to figure out which items relate to the making of the lemonade or whatever object is in the middle. For each item guessed, the game explains how it is or isn’t related to the creation of lemonade. It would be a great game to show students just how much conservation relates to their lives.
